What is Paraquat?
Paraquat is a liquid herbicide that has been widely used since the early 1960s. Its effectiveness is the reason for its continued use, as it is potent enough to clear large areas of land in a very short amount of time. It is usually sprayed onto crops and fields using tractors or hand sprayers, both of which pose serious health risks for workers.
Unfortunately, despite its connections to Parkinson’s disease and other complications, paraquat use in the U.S. continues to increase. According to data from the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project, the amount of paraquat used on domestic crops actually doubled from 2006 through 2016. Ironically, the reason for this increase is largely due to sanctions that have hampered the production of similar products (RoundUp is one such example).
The harmful chemical has been banned in over 30 countries across the world, including the European Union, China, and Brazil. However, as of now, no U.S. officials or agencies have banned or condemned the use of paraquat products–not only that, but in October of 2020, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated that they felt there was no need at this time for a widespread paraquat ban
Why are Paraquat Products Associated With Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease is an extremely serious and degenerative neurological condition that causes severe damage to a victim’s cognitive and physical abilities. Muscle movement, speech, and motor skills are all affected by Parkinsons, but perhaps the most recognizable symptom is the constant muscle tremors that cause victims to shake and spasm. There are various medications and therapies that may improve a victim’s quality of life, but as of now there is no definitive cure for the disease.
Doctors and researchers have been studying the connection between paraquat products and Parkinson’s disease for decades now–while it is difficult to pinpoint exact causes and correlations, the problem is believed to be centered around damaged brain cells. Paraquat is devastating to our body’s cells, and once it reaches the nervous system, the damage typically leads to severe conditions like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s.
Anyone who uses paraquat products as part of their job is encouraged to stop immediately, especially if they are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Dizziness, nausea, or vomiting
- Stomach pain
- Inflammation of the mouth or throat
- Increased heart rate
- Trouble breathing or respiratory problems
- Pulmonary edema
Which Paraquat Manufacturers are Involved in Litigation, and For What Products?
Paraquat is featured in numerous products made by a large number of different companies. That being said, there are some makers and products that have been cited in claims more than others, such as:
Syngenta, Growmark, and Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. are the main defendants in current paraquat suits.
Popular paraquat products include Quick-Quat, Helmquat, Para-SHOT, Orth-Paraquat, Devour, Firestorm, and Blanco weed killers.
As of now, litigation surrounding paraquat claims is still developing, as the COVID-19 pandemic largely delayed judicial proceedings. However, in June of 2021, the Judicial Panel for Multidistrict Litigation created MDL 3004 in order to start consolidating the growing number of cases. As these cases move forward, time will be of the essence for claimants to come forward, which is why it’s so important to speak with qualified paraquat attorneys as soon as possible.
