A Year Later, Van Law Firm Remembers Those Affected By the 2021 Texas Winter Storms
From February 13th through February 17th, 2021, a series of devastating winter storms wreaked havoc across Texas. All 254 of the state’s counties faced subfreezing temperatures, failing infrastructure, and limited supplies–thousands were left without power for multiple days due to rolling blackouts.
In the aftermath of the storm, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) came under fire for their lack of foresight and inability to keep up with demand, and numerous lawsuits are still being filed. Texas has a unique, decentralized power grid that was ill-prepared for an event of this scale.
Giving back to those in need has always been a core value for Van Law Firm and our founder Sandy Van. Immediately after the storms hit, VLF pledged $10,000 towards relief efforts, which was the least we could do to help with emergency supplies and evacuations.

All in all, the freeze caused billions of dollars worth of damage, and many are still struggling to rebuild as plumbing and electrical systems were especially affected by the sudden drop in temperatures. While the financial impact of these storms is immense, it pales in comparison to the lives that were lost as a result of this disaster–after nearly a year of investigations, the state’s Disaster Mortality Surveillance Unit has officially set the final death toll at 246. The ages of the deceased ranged from 1 to 102 years old.
We at Van Law Firm would like to extend our deepest condolences to all those who were affected and continue to be affected by the aftermath of this tragedy. Even though at times we may feel farther apart than ever, all it takes is a natural disaster such as this to remind us that we really do rely on one another. In our 10+ years of operation, we’ve helped innumerable accident victims get back on their feet, but even we have trouble fully comprehending the magnitude of what has happened to our brothers and sisters in the Lone Star State.
