Zantac and Its Manufacturers: What You Should Know

When Zantac and other ranitidine medications were discovered to contain harmful levels of the cancer-inducing chemical N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), they were subsequently recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on April 1st, 2020. 

However, this recall is a little bit different from others for two reasons: 1) the drug has been in circulation for nearly 40 years and is one of the most commercially-successful drugs in history, and 2) Zantac’s original patent expired over 20 years ago. What these two factors equate to is essentially a humongous supply chain and a laundry list of manufacturers, products, and generic options. 

Because the drug has been so widely circulated for so many years, it is much more difficult to eradicate the massive supply than with newer, more niche drugs. Some users may have years or even decades of use history, and therefore it may be more difficult to convince patients to stop taking it.

In addition, GlaxoSmithKline– formerly Glaxo Holdings Ltd.– was the original manufacturer, but after their Zantac patent expired in 1997, the market was completely flooded with dozens of generic products. In order to fully mitigate the effects of these dangerous drugs, health agencies such as the FDA as well as prosecutors must cast a wide net.

All Zantac and ranitidine products have been found to contain unsafe levels of NDMA, typically registering thousands of nanograms per dose. For comparison, the safe daily intake limit set by the FDA is just 96 nanograms.
