Veozah: What You Need to Know About the Menopause Drug Linked to Liver Damage
“You can have fewer hot flashes and more not flashes.” You might recognize this phrase from an advertisement, even if you don’t recall the drug’s name. The ad promotes Veozah, a medication approved by the FDA in May 2023 for treating hot flashes and night sweats in women experiencing menopause. However, despite FDA approval, a patient taking Veozah has reported severe liver damage. If you took Veozah and suffered from liver complications, you may be entitled to compensation.
What is Veozah?
Unlike traditional hormone therapies, Veozah (Fezolinetant) does not rely on hormones. Instead, it specifically targets menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats. Administered in pill form, the FDA found that Veozah effectively reduces the frequency and severity of these symptoms.
The drug’s manufacturer, Astellas, warns that Veozah can cause elevated liver enzyme levels, and they recommend blood tests before starting the medication and every three months for nine months thereafter. However, in September 2024, the FDA issued a stronger warning linking Veozah to severe liver injury. The FDA now advises monthly blood tests for the first three months of treatment, followed by tests every three months for the first nine months.
Because Astellas failed to fully inform patients of the risk of severe liver damage, they may be held liable for any harm caused.
