Just How Many Defendants Are Part of the Zantac Suit?

Zantac and ranitidine products have been discovered to contain hazardous levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a documented carcinogen. Longtime users have begun to experience serious complications, such as cancer of the stomach, lungs, liver, and more.

As a result, cancer lawsuits are continuing to pour in by the thousands all across the country. Unsurprisingly, the various pharmaceutical manufacturers who produced ranitidine products, such as GlaxoSmithKline, have emerged as the top defendants.

However, the total range of defendants in Zantac lawsuits is continuing to expand as well. The reason for this expansion is that plaintiffs’ lawyers are beginning to bring forth claims against retailers and pharmacies as well.

Why are supply chain companies and retailers named Defendants?

The scope and size of Zantac litigation are massive up to this point. There are currently over 50,000 claimants and counting, and many of the manufacturers being named are worth billions upon billions of dollars.

So, by expanding the fault to include retailers and suppliers, plaintiffs’ lawyers are attempting to hold every entity in the supply chain accountable for the harm that Zantac has caused. They are also hoping to expand the pool of opportunities, should one avenue become closed.

The other reason for doing so would be as a result of the various studies conducted on ranitidine products. Almost every study that has been published, including the citizen petition from Emery Pharma, has cited the fact that ranitidine molecules are time and temperature-sensitive, meaning that longer storage times or higher storage temperatures can contribute to higher levels of NDMA.

These two factors are common occurrences when shipping, storing, and distributing drugs, and so that is why more companies are continuing to be mentioned.

Which Companies are Being Named?

As of now, the list of alternate defendants in Zantac suits has included:

  • Albertsons Companies
  • BJ’s Wholesale Club Holdings
  • Costco
  • CVS Pharmacy, Inc.
  • Dolgencorp
  • Dollar Tree/Family Dollar
