I took Zantac, am I at Risk of Cancer?

In recent years, medical researchers have compiled substantial evidence linking Zantac and other ranitidine medications to unsafe levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA, which is a known carcinogen.

NDMA exposure has been linked to several cancers all throughout the body, including liver, tongue, esophagus, lung, pancreas, kidney, and bladder cancers. Any immediate concerns about cancer from Zantac should be addressed with a medical professional. It is important to note that each case is unique, and there is no exact formula to determine what your risk of cancer might be. As a general rule, the longer a patient has taken Zantac, the higher the risk for developing cancer.

If you have previously taken Zantac and are currently experiencing the following symptoms, it is advised that you stop right away and consult with your physician:

  • Reduced function of the lungs, kidney, or liver
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headaches
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Jaundice
  • Fever
  • Dizziness

In years past, it has been discovered through animal testing that high doses and long exposures to NDMA increase the risk of animals getting cancer. In a study of lab rodents, overall life expectancy decreased, survival rates in offspring decreased and liver tumors were more prevalent.

For ethical reasons, similar testing has not been conducted on humans, but the severe uptick in cancer diagnoses among ranitidine users as well as significant evidence from animal testing has led health agencies to classify NDMA as a Group 2A carcinogen, meaning that it is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

What Happens to Zantac Now?

Zantac and all other ranitidine-based medications were ultimately recalled by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on April 1st, 2020. This was categorized under a Class I recall, which is the most serious type.

As a result of this recall, all Zantac and ranitidine products have been pulled from the shelves of all pharmacies and retailers, and doctors and pharmacists are prohibited from prescribing or otherwise distributing these medications. Individuals in the US are also prohibited from importing or exporting these products, and manufacturers are now under stricter regulations.

Tens of thousands of Zantac lawsuits will likely be filed over the next few years alleging that overexposure to NDMA causes cancer. As of recently, Zantac and ranitidine suits are beginning to move forward. Lawyers and industry experts suspect that a settlement for Zantac litigation could be worth many billions of dollars.
