CoolSculpting Lawsuits

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is the common name for cryolipolysis, a popular cosmetic procedure that removes fat from the body. This process works by freezing and destroying the fat cells found under the skin. Patients often choose this procedure over traditional surgeries like a tummy-tuck, or liposuction.

After the fat cells are destroyed, they are removed by the body’s natural waste processes. Side effects are usually minimal, and may include some stinging, discoloration, or prolonged bruising. These usually resolve in days to weeks, depending on how much work was done.

Benefits include rapid recovery time, minimal pain and discomfort, and the ability to tailor results to each individual. The procedure is usually $1,000-$4,000.

What is going wrong?

In a small percentage of cases, CoolSculpting can cause paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH). When this happens, the targeted fat cells actually increase in both number and size, leaving lumpy and disfigured areas. These areas often resemble a “stick of butter” under the skin, leaving a lumpy, irregular, often box-shaped mass. These lumpy masses that result take 6-9 months to soften, and then can be removed through liposuction or surgery.

While PAH has been a known risk for some time, many patients and providers are concerned that the companies undersold how often PAH can happen or how severe it can be.

PAH is not common, affecting only 0.0051%-0.025% of patients.

Known risk factors for PAH include…

  • Male gender (males are roughly 3x more likely to be affected than females)
  • Use of an older and/or larger CoolSculpt handpiece unit
  • Treatment of abdominal areas
  • Prior cryolipolysis procedures
  • Hispanic or Latino origin

Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is not cancerous, but its disfiguring effects are permanent without follow-up treatments. Restoring your body to its desired appearance and functionality will most likely require liposuction or invasive surgeries, like a tummy tuck or similar.

Some side effects are to be expected. But if these symptoms last longer than a few months, you may qualify:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Bruising
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Darkening of the treated area
  • A “squared off” or “box-like” appearance of the treated area, similar in size and shape to the applicator wand.

Always be sure to communicate any concerns about your health to your medical providers first. They will be in the best position to ensure you are in no immediate danger.

How do I know if I qualify for a lawsuit?

If you received a CoolSculpting treatment, and your negative side effects have not resolved, you may qualify for a lawsuit. The courts are currently sorting through a first wave of cases to determine which patients are most qualified and the ranges of awards.

Until those lawsuits are finalized, your legal team will be able to help you determine if you qualify for a lawsuit.

To help your legal team, be prepared to answer basic questions about your experience:

  • When did you receive CoolSculpting treatments?
  • Where on your body were you treated?
  • Who was your healthcare provider during these treatments?
  • Were you told there could be negative side effects?
  • How long have these negative side effects lasted?
  • Did you follow-up with your doctor as instructed?
