EzriCare Eye Drop Recall

Eye drops are the typical solution for dry eyes. The saline and water solution helps relieve eye irritation. These eye drops have relieved dry eyes for years; however, they are now the subject of a mass recall alongside two other brands.

There have been recent recalls of EzriCare Artificial Tears, Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears, Brimonidine Tartrate Ophthalmic Solution, and Purely Soothing MSM Drops. Some of these have been voluntary recalls, but the FDA has issued a warning for Artificial Tears. 

These bacteria have not been observed in the United States until recently with these infections. The CDC and FDA have been heavily involved to ensure the number of cases has been minimized, but they are still being found in several states.

What Is a Recall?

A recall is when the manufacturer or distributor of a product takes it off the store shelves and informs consumers to discard it. Recalls happen in any consumer-based industry. Vehicles can be recalled just as any consumable product, in this case, eye drops.

EzriCare has been informed by the FDA of possible contamination, and EzriCare is now issuing a recall on specific batches of eyedrops. The exact packing descriptions of the product are listed on the FDA website.

Why Are They Being Recalled?

Artificial Tears are suspected to have been contaminated with a drug-resistant bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This bacteria is associated with eye infections, serious illnesses, and potential blindness. 

Infections related to the eye drops have been reported in 16 states, including California, Nevada, and Washington. A Florida woman experienced an infection so awful that she had to have her eye surgically removed.

These infections can be serious and lead to serious harm. It is important to discard any bottles of the above-listed products and see a doctor about possible exposure. If you are exposed, follow your doctor’s orders and retain all records of your visits.

What Can You Do If You’ve Been Exposed?

The first step is always to consult your doctor and determine if you are suffering from an eye infection. These infections may not be obvious and require testing to catch them early. If you are suffering from an infection in the eye, there are ways you can be compensated. 

The symptoms of an infection can include yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye; redness of the eye or eyelid; increased sensitivity to light; and eye pain or discomfort. These eye drops would have been purchased between April 5, 2022, and February 22, 2023.
