Sundance Spas in Hot Water as Hot Tubs & Jacuzzis Recalled

Sundance Spas and Jacuzzi Hot Tubs recently found themselves in hot water when they recalled around 23,700 of their hot tub products. While hot tub or jacuzzi temperatures of around 100°F are recommended as safe temperatures for a healthy adult, in no circumstances should hot tub water temperatures exceed 104°F. However, in December 2022, it was revealed that Sundance Spas and Jacuzzi Hot Tubs’ products were being recalled for temperature and safety issues.

Sundance Spas and Jacuzzi Hot Tubs Can Get Dangerously Hot

It has recently been revealed that the temperature sensors in Sundance Spas and Jacuzzi Hot Tubs may not display the correct water temperature – leaving users unaware when the water is hotter than intended, or worse – reaching dangerous levels when the water temperature is greater than the maximum temperature of 104°F.

Although no one has reported injuries, there have been more than 180 reports of inaccurate temperature readings. If the temperature in a hot tub is higher than expected or exceeds the maximum of 104°F, it can lead to serious injuries such as burns or heat stroke.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has warned manufacturers and consumers alike of the dangers of water temperatures exceeding 104°F for decades, as this maximum temperature was first referenced in a 1979 CPSC news release. As prominent manufacturers of hot tubs and jacuzzis, Sundance Spas and Jacuzzi Hot Tubs should have been well aware of these regulations and taken extra precautions to ensure the safety of their consumers.

According to Pool Magazine, one consumer’s Jacuzzi J-355 temperature gauge displayed the water temperature as 101°F, but when they entered the hot tub, the water felt “searing hot.” When the consumer tested the water temperature with an external thermometer, it read 126°F – well exceeding the maximum temperature.

What to Do if Your Hot Tub or Jacuzzi Is Displaying the Wrong Temperature

Although the company has been reaching out to known consumers of these dangerous products, many consumers have been forced to take matters into their own hands to determine if their hot tub or jacuzzi is affected.

If you purchased your Sundance Spa or Jacuzzi Hot Tub between July 2021 and December 2022, you should check the model and serial number, which is inscribed into a silver plate in the equipment bay. The recall includes Jacuzzi J-200, J-300, J-400, and J-500 collection hot tubs and Sundance Spas 680, 780, 880, and 890 Series Spas.

Sundance Spas is requesting that all consumers who think that they might be experiencing this problem conduct an at-home test before entering the hot tub or jacuzzi, using an accurate external thermometer to confirm the water temperature is below 104°F.
