Zantac Lawsuit – Everything you need to know in 2022
What is Zantac?
Zantac is a heartburn medication that was both prescribed by doctors and sold over the counter to customers. People used the drug to stop heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach.
When Zantac is wrongly stored, it transforms and its levels of NDMA increase. NDMA is a drug which is extremely harmful to the body as it is linked to cancer. In June of 2019, an online pharmacy laboratory, while testing the safety of drugs it sold, found that Zantac was transforming into the harmful NDMA. For context, the laboratory found that a person would need to smoke over 500 cigarettes to get the same level of NDMA that was in a single dose of Zantac.
Unlike other dangerous products, Zantac is unique in that the FDA has pulled ALL Zantac from store shelves. This speaks to the Zantac’s high level of danger.

What is the average payout for a Zantac claim?
Currently, no Zantac lawsuit has been paid out. The lawsuits are ongoing. They are not expected to start paying out for another few years. Because of this, it is difficult to give an exact number for the average payout. However, we can look to similar cases to help us understand what payout we can expect.
It is important to note that any payout is affected by several factors that may, or may not, be unique to that case. The factors are:
- The extent of the injuries. A person suffering from a later stage of cancer could get a higher payout than someone in an earlier stage.
- The number of injuries. For example, having more than one type of cancer could lead to a higher payout.
- The strength of the evidence. Someone who kept records of medical treatments for any cancer or dates when they started and stopped taking the drug will be able to better prove the claim and can lead to a higher payout.
The combination of factors will put an injured party into one of three tiers with those in the upper tiers receiving higher payouts. The higher payouts will likely be above $300,000 and the lowest will likely be around $60,000. For more information on potential Zantac payouts, check out this post for more information.
