Settlement Estimates for Zantac Claims and Zantac Litigation Updates for 2022
After decades of use and circulation, scientists have discovered that Zantac and other ranitidine-based drugs may be extremely harmful because they can contain unhealthy amounts of a carcinogenic chemical known as N-nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA for short. As a result, thousands of users have been diagnosed with various forms of cancer and are now seeking legal action against the manufacturers of these drugs. Currently, there are a little over 1,700 suits that have officially been filed in federal courts but tens of thousands more have been preserved or queued as being potential claims.
That being said, potential Zantac claimants are sure to have a lot of questions, and one of the most pressing is whether or not an average settlement value has been established. Due to the infancy of proceedings, there are still a lot of factors to consider, but we do have experience from past cases we can draw from. Let’s take a look at how Zantac claims are developing at this moment:

As of now, it’s simply not possible to point to exact settlement figures, for two reasons: first, each client will have different injuries which will result in different settlements, and second, litigation has not moved far enough along to start formulating average values. However, we have worked on numerous pharmaceutical mass tort cases, which gives us a sense of what to look for.
In our experience, these types of proceedings generally form tiers of settlements, meaning that the most severe cases will be paid the most. To be clear, we are not making any definitive assertions, but we believe that the highest tier of Zantac settlements could land anywhere from about $250,000 to $400,000.
The tier below that will probably fetch anywhere from about $75,000 to $150,000, and third tier claimants may expect about $25,000 to $50,000. Just to reiterate, these are speculations, and cases may be settled for more or less than these figures.

The biggest Zantac litigation update for the coming year is that federal lawsuits are now only accepting eight types of cancer–prostate, liver, bladder, colorectal, gastric, esophageal, and pancreatic. Claims were previously being filed for breast and kidney cancer as well, but they have since been excluded. Not only that, but we feel that more exclusions are likely coming at some time in the future, which is why our Zantac attorneys are currently focusing on cases that feature bladder, gastric, liver, pancreatic, and esophageal cancers.
Resolving Zantac Claims Via Global Settlement
Even though we cannot determine exact settlement figures at this time, we do feel fairly confident that these claims will be resolved through a global settlement IF they are not dismissed, which is an important qualifier.

The Zantac multidistrict litigation (MDL) was formed in 2019, and since then attorneys have been hard at work in what is called the discovery phase, as they continue to compile more data and evidence that supports the claim that Zantac impurities can cause cancer. This phase will likely conclude sometime this year, at which point the bellwether trial phase will begin. These are essentially “test” cases that go to trial in efforts to try and gauge how successful the remaining claims will be. If bellwether cases are successful—which we believe they will be–the defendants will then make a decision on how to proceed. Most elect to settle via global settlement instead of fighting more litigation that is likely to be unsuccessful.
