Nexium is one of several popular heartburn drugs now linked to kidney damage. When used for prolonged periods, people have developed significant kidney issues, requiring dialysis and kidney transplants.
If you took Nexium and now have kidney-related symptoms, you may be able to join lawsuits against the makers of these proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs already underway. You can work with a mass torts attorney for help seeking justice for issues like kidney failure and chronic kidney disease.
What Studies Link Nexium and Other PPIs to Kidney Damage?
Several studies have linked Nexium and other similar PPI medications to kidney damage. Research published in JAMA Internal Medicine and the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology agrees that taking a PPI for 30 days or longer could increase the risk of kidney damage. This includes both prescription and over-the-counter formulations.
Common types of kidney damage linked to these drugs include:
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
- Progression of CKD in those already affected
- Kidney failure
- End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis
- Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN)
- Other kidney injuries
Another medical study at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that many people did not exhibit symptoms of kidney injury while taking PPIs yet still experienced damage. This study looked at 125,000 patients taking this class of drugs. More than half of the patients who later reported kidney injuries did not have any reported symptoms or other signs of damage. This means that these drugs could be causing kidney injuries without the patient knowing.
What Is Nexium?
Nexium, also known as esomeprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of acid in the stomach. It treats heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and related conditions.
PPIs are among the most prescribed medications in the United States. Nexium is in the same class of drugs as Prilosec, Protonix, and Dexilent. It is manufactured by AstraZeneca and Pfizer, depending on the formulation.
Nexium is available by prescription or in an over-the-counter preparation meant for use over short periods of time. If you notice any signs of kidney problems after taking it, speak to your healthcare provider right away.

Lawsuits Are Pending Related to Nexium and Kidney Damage
If you have a medical condition after taking Nexium, you should consider meeting with an attorney representing victims of this dangerous drug. There is ongoing mass litigation related to PPIs and kidney injuries. Nexium users who have a wide range of kidney-related diagnoses can seek justice.
As of November 2023, these cases have been consolidated into a specific type of mass tort known as multidistrict litigation (MDL). This case is MDL 2789, IN RE: Proton-Pump Inhibitor Products Liability Litigation (No. II). This litigation includes cases filed against the manufacturers of several PPI medications, including Nexium 24HR, Nexium, Nexium IV, Nexium Packet, Prilosec, Prilosec OTC, and more.
This case is under the oversight of the Honorable Judge Claire Cecchi in the U.S. District Court in the District of New Jersey. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation noted 12,826 pending actions in the mass tort on October 16, 2023.
This MDL is well underway. Some plaintiffs have already accepted settlements, and more are in negotiations. The case is scheduled to proceed with bellwether trials unless a global settlement occurs.
How вo MDLs Work?
When the courts consolidate many lawsuits into an MDL, there are several advantages for those involved. This process allows the plaintiffs to pool their money and other resources for discovery and pre-trial motions. This keeps the lower courts from getting clogged with thousands of similar cases, creating a backlog.
Thanks to MDLs and bellwether trials, mass torts often end with all cases being dropped or a global or tiered settlement. When necessary, any remaining cases in the MDL can return to their original jurisdiction for a jury trial.
What Damages Are Available in a Nexium Kidney Damage Case?
Many of the people alleging serious kidney injuries after using PPIs are now living with long-term or lasting injuries. They will likely need additional monitoring, treatment, and support because of the damage that occurred. Our attorneys work with medical expert witnesses who can help us understand future care needs and related expenses.
The expenses and losses in these cases could involve:
- Current and future medical care, including monitoring, management, and treatment
- Income lost from not being able to work
- Diminished earning capacity for lasting injuries
- Miscellaneous expenses with receipts
- Pain and suffering, emotional distress, and other intangible losses
Our attorneys understand how to document the recoverable damages and value these cases. This is especially important in cases that might become part of an MDL or another mass tort. These cases could involve tiered settlement offers, so documenting the severity of injuries and the full extent of current and future costs is vital.

These guys are amazing. Helped me throughout the process. Always there when I need help. Inititailly called a law firm (the one that has lots of ads on the radio), but they declined my case. Van Law Firm accepted my case without a second thought! Kudos to Daniel, my case manager, and Amanda who expedited my payment process. Highly recommended.Milby Mags
Got in an accident at the beginning of the year and they have been awesome, especially with it being my first accident and me being like this. They have been very communicated, stayed in contact with me the whole time, giving me updates when there were any and even when there weren’t and answered any question I had. I would recommend them to anyone. Everyone I have talked to there has been very friendly. I would give them a 10 out of 10.Ethan Gullet
They made sure that my insurance company covered what I paid for them to which included the gap for my car that was totaled. My medical costs were taken care of and reduced substantially so I was able to get more on my settlement. My case manager, Will Garcia, was always helpful in assisting me and answering any questions I had. They really did an amazing job with my case. I would definitely recommend them to anyone in need of this type of legal help. Most lawyers do not help you with the recovery of the car and rental etc. They are amazing.Teresa Cuthbertson
