Have You Experienced Head Trauma? You Could be Suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury

In recent years, head injuries have become a much more important topic in terms of recognition and treatment. A large number of accident victims are now starting to understand that head injuries can have lifelong impacts if they are not treated or at least taken seriously. After an accident, you should be thoroughly examined for head injuries immediately, as well as additional checks over the course of your case and even beyond.

The effects of head injuries can vary from barely noticeable to excruciating pain and discomfort. If a head injury is severe, it may be diagnosed as a Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI. TBI victims are entitled to multiple kinds of compensation, but first they must retain an experienced attorney. Van Law Firm has been helping accident victims recover compensation for various kinds of head injuries for nearly ten years now, and we’re just getting started. Call our office nearest you for more information.

Symptoms of TBI

When thinking of a head injury, most people envision severe impacts and blows.  However, even a mild injury to your head such as a bump or jolt from a slip and fall, car accident, sports injury, or assault can cause a brain injury.  Mild TBI (often referred to as a having a “concussion”) often goes unreported because people do not recognize their symptoms as resulting from the TBI, do not think their symptoms are severe enough to report or fear repercussions in the workplace.

Symptoms of severe TBI are easy to recognize and may include loss of consciousness, severe headache, nausea/vomiting, seizures, and memory loss.

Other, less severe symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Balance or coordination problems
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Fatigue or insomnia
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Feeling groggy

Although most patients with mild TBI generally recover without negative consequences, this injury can be dangerous as it can be associated with long-term cognitive decline.  Repeated mild impacts (such as from playing sports) can result in greater decline and more persistent negative effects.

Diagnosis of TBI

Previously, mild TBI was difficult to diagnose.  However, a new cutting-edge technology called Diffuse Tensor Imaging (DTI) can provide direct evidence of a brain injury where old methods failed to locate an abnormality.  Early diagnosis of mild TBI can help patients get the care they need and help prevent long-term disabilities.

A DTI scan is performed using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology.  No radiation is used.  The scan views the diffusion of water through the patient’s brain, looking for injuries to the nerves in the brain.

Accidents Involving TBI and Compensation

Essentially, every kind of accident has the potential to cause traumatic brain injuries. As noted above, these injuries can happen anytime a victim experiences a sharp blow or jolt. The most common instances involving TBI include vehicle accidents, pool accidents and drownings, slip and falls, work-related accidents, and more.

As far as compensation, severe head injuries have become extremely significant. New data is constantly giving us more information as to how devastating these ailments can be later in life, and so courts recognize the significance of these injuries as well as the need for lasting care and treatment. In addition to the standard compensatory damages that are typically awarded such as medical expenses and loss of wages, victims of TBI may also recover non-economic losses such as pain and suffering or loss of enjoyment.
