Renuvion/J-Plasma Device Causing Life-Threatening Injuries During Cosmetic Procedures
The FDA issued a warning on March 14th, 2022 advising physicians against the use of Renuvion (j-plasma) devices during specific aesthetic procedures. The specific types of procedures the FDA warned against included dermal resurfacing or skin contraction, which can be used in combination with liposuction.
The FDA has not cleared or approved the use of these devices for any aesthetic skin procedures and any patient who has adverse side effects after use should contact Van Law Firm immediately.
What Is a Renuvion/J-Plasma Device and Why Is It Used?
A Renuvion/J-Plasma device uses radio frequency energy and helium to generate plasma in order to cut and remove soft tissue during a non-invasive procedure. A Renuvion device can be used for cutting, coagulation, and ablation of soft tissue while using heat during surgery.
There seems to be no current problems regarding the use of this device during general surgical procedures, and the FDA has cleared this device to be used only for those specific purposes. The device only seems to pose a risk during skin tightening and other aesthetic procedures.

What Procedures Can You NOT Use Renuvion For?
Renuvion is used for an aesthetic procedure to tighten and refresh a patient’s loose skin. These procedures are non-invasive surgeries, with no extended recovery time, nor do they produce large scars on the patient. The use of this device for aesthetic procedures has been prohibited by the FDA due to the significant damage it has caused patients.
This procedure requires the device to be put under the skin and the combination of energies and gasses will contract the tissue under the skin to tighten it. It is important for physicians to be fully aware of what procedures they cannot conduct while using the Renuvion device. If a physician is aware that using this device is prohibited, but still chooses to proceed, then it is likely we can establish a lawsuit against the physician.
What Injuries Can This Device Cause?
The use of the Renuvion device for aesthetic procedures can cause serious injuries, including the following:
- Change in a patient’s skin color
- Scars
- Nerve damage
- Significant bleeding
- Air or gas accumulation under the patient’s skin or body cavity or in blood vessels
These injuries can range in severity and treatment plans vary. The more severe injuries can be irreversible and/or cause life-long pain for the patient. The less severe injuries could be fixed relatively easily by a physician who is experienced in their profession.
Either injury could still be traumatic and painful.

Seeking Justice After a Renuvion Injury
If a Renuvion device is used for an aesthetic skin procedure, it can cause serious and life-threatening injuries to the patient. The FDA has very clearly not approved the use of this device for aesthetic procedures, therefore any physician that uses this device for that purpose could be found liable for any injuries that ensue.
One of our experienced attorneys should be able to establish a lawsuit against the physician, and the patient could receive damages to support any lost wages, medical expenses, and pain & suffering.
