Diabetes medication Mounjaro has been linked to several serious gastrointestinal side effects and health issues, such as pancreatitis, low blood sugar, kidney failure, abdominal pain or stomach problems, blurred vision, and allergic reactions. This injectable prescription medication is popular for both managing diabetes and aiding in weight loss.
If you took Mounjaro or similar medications and suffered significant side effects or health issues, you may want to speak with a mass torts attorney. Some users of this medication have already filed lawsuits against the drug manufacturer, and a mass tort could occur in the near future.
What Are the Risks Associated With Mounjaro Use?
Many users of Mounjaro and other similar medications report concerns that include gastroparesis, bowel obstruction, pancreatitis, and other digestive issues. A recent study published in JAMA confirmed an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events when using GLP-1 agonists, including Mounjaro.
Several of these concerns are very serious for some users of these medications. When someone has stomach paralysis, also known as gastroparesis, they often endure common side effects like severe pain, indigestion, bloating, difficulty getting enough vitamins, nausea and vomiting, blood sugar fluctuations, and constipation.
While Mounjaro is very effective for managing diabetes and aiding weight loss, these possible side effects and health issues make it inappropriate for some people who are already at an increased risk of these conditions.

What Is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a GLP-1 agonist approved to treat Type 2 diabetes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved this medication in May 2022. The Mounjaro drug label notes that there is an increased risk of gastrointestinal side effects with this medication.
The medication, manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company, has FDA approval to help manage blood sugar levels in those with Type 2 diabetes. However, it has been prescribed off-label as a weight loss drug as well. Other similar medications include Ozempic and Wegovy.
Patients use a weekly injection of the prescription drug Mounjaro. This medication is increasing in popularity because it can help users better manage their blood sugar levels while losing a significant amount of weight. Some users have been able to discontinue the use of diabetes treatments and blood pressure medications after weight loss. However, it is imperative for users to monitor for side effects and health issues.
Pending Lawsuits Based on Mounjaro Side Effects and Health Issues
While Mounjaro has only been on the market for about 18 months, there is already pending litigation as of November 2023. These weight loss drug lawsuits against Eli Lilly and Company and other medication manufacturers allege that these medications can cause severe gastrointestinal problems. This could include gastroparesis, blockages, abdominal pain, and more. These lawsuits claim that manufacturers failed to adequately warn users of the risk of significant health issues.
These lawsuits are likely just getting started. The first suit, filed on behalf of Jaclyn Bjorkland in August of 2023, comes after she took Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Ozempic (semaglutide). She developed serious gastrointestinal symptoms, including severe vomiting.
Other lawsuits have been filed since that time. Many others could follow. Ultimately, there is no way to predict whether there will be enough to warrant a mass tort. However, if so, the U.S. Panel for Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) would most likely consolidate these cases into an MDL for discovery, pretrial motions, and bellwether trials.
What Should You Do If You Took Mounjaro and Developed Serious Side Effects?
If you took Mounjaro and developed serious side effects, you should get immediate medical attention and discuss your options with your doctor first. They will offer medical advice and likely prescribe a different drug to help manage your blood sugar levels while treating your new health issues. You must continue treatment throughout this process to protect your right to recover fair compensation.
Once your medical condition is stabilized, consider speaking with an attorney who is handling Mounjaro lawsuits. Law firms representing clients in these cases are familiar with the necessary building blocks of a claim and can assess your circumstances. They will be able to answer your questions based on the specific details of your case, too.
It is important to remember that these lawsuits are still in the earliest stages. There is no way to predict if or when a mass tort might be necessary. Your attorney will provide the latest updates about how many cases are pending and the current outlook on how your case could proceed.

How Can a Defective Drugs Lawyer Help You After You Suffered a Health Condition?
When you work with a defective drug attorney, the legal team will know how to build a strong case against the medical manufacturer. This includes relating the side effects and health issues to the use of the drug. You can continue focusing on your health while the lawyer builds a compelling case to recover compensation and hold the pharmaceutical company accountable.
It can seem overwhelming when you consider taking on a multinational corporation like a drug manufacturer on your own. This is one major advantage of a mass tort—all the plaintiffs fight the company together. However, your lawyer will know how to navigate the legal process, regardless of whether there is a mass tort. They will not hesitate to go toe-to-toe with the drug maker to protect your rights and get justice.
Most defective drug lawyers handle cases without charging upfront fees. You should not have to pay out of your own pocket to hire a lawyer to manage your case. They generally work based on contingency. Van Law, for example, charges our clients a portion of the money recovered in the case. You only pay after we win.

These guys are amazing. Helped me throughout the process. Always there when I need help. Inititailly called a law firm (the one that has lots of ads on the radio), but they declined my case. Van Law Firm accepted my case without a second thought! Kudos to Daniel, my case manager, and Amanda who expedited my payment process. Highly recommended.Milby Mags
Got in an accident at the beginning of the year and they have been awesome, especially with it being my first accident and me being like this. They have been very communicated, stayed in contact with me the whole time, giving me updates when there were any and even when there weren’t and answered any question I had. I would recommend them to anyone. Everyone I have talked to there has been very friendly. I would give them a 10 out of 10.Ethan Gullet
They made sure that my insurance company covered what I paid for them to which included the gap for my car that was totaled. My medical costs were taken care of and reduced substantially so I was able to get more on my settlement. My case manager, Will Garcia, was always helpful in assisting me and answering any questions I had. They really did an amazing job with my case. I would definitely recommend them to anyone in need of this type of legal help. Most lawyers do not help you with the recovery of the car and rental etc. They are amazing.Teresa Cuthbertson
