What You Need to Know in Texas

Over the past few years, an increasing amount of evidence has been discovered connecting the well-known heartburn and stomach drug Zantac (ranitidine hydrochloride) to cancer-inducing levels of the carcinogenic chemical N-nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA. This damaging discovery has led to all Zantac products being recalled from the US market, including Texas.

Individuals who have used Zantac products for an extended period of time and have recently been subjected to unforeseen complications may move forward with legal action. At Van Law Firm, our trusted legal team of Texas Zantac attorneys are accepting clients under a defective drug, personal injury, or wrongful death basis. As a personal injury firm, it’s our job to hold these pharmaceutical manufacturers accountable while also fighting for our clients’ rightful compensation.

Let us evaluate your situation and determine the best path to take to help you achieve your goals. Give our injury attorneys a call today at 702-529-1011.

Why is Zantac Being Recalled?

For nearly 40 years, Zantac has been one of the most widely circulated medications for heartburn and other stomach problems. Due to its popularity and availability, it is assumed that hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people have taken Zantac in some capacity.

Studies and lab tests have shown that the problem behind the eye-popping levels of NDMA in Zantac lies within the drug’s active ingredient, ranitidine. Whereas most drugs become tainted from an outside source, Zantac is unique in that ranitidine actually creates the carcinogen by itself– the compound breaks down over time, and the leftover ingredients combine to create NDMA. In studies, researchers have routinely posted NDMA levels that exceeded thousands of nanograms per tablet, which is much higher than the FDA’s proposed limit of 96 nanograms per day.

Zantac’s Possible Side Effects

There are no reputable health agencies that have not classified NDMA as at least a probable carcinogen. Once ingested, the molecules can affect all parts of the body, and so the following cancers have been identified in Zantac lawsuits:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Brain cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Esophageal/nasal/throat cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Lung cancer (in non-smokers)
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Testicular cancer
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Uterine cancer

Zantac Lawsuits/ Criteria in Texas

Due to these jarring discoveries, it stands to reason that Zantac users and their families may be frustrated or confused, and may wish to pursue legal action. Any individuals in Texas who are considering filing a lawsuit should consider the following criteria that has been established thus far:

  • Proven use: One might reasonably expect that the foundation of a Zantac case will revolve around a proven history of use, typically for at least 6 months prior to filing a claim.

  • Subsequent diagnosis: The next step in building a case would involve a documented diagnosis of one of the previously mentioned forms of cancer. This diagnosis must come after using Zantac, and the pre-existing conditions hepatitis B and C, H. pylori, and achalasia have been deemed as disqualifying.

  • Extent of damages: Individuals are expected to show how they’ve been affected by Zantac, usually through incurred medical costs and damage to future earnings.

It should be noted that individuals who primarily live in or took Zantac in the following places have been deemed ineligible: Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Tennessee, and Puerto Rico.
